Have you already had the chance to stay on Giglio Island? No? You have to fix it right away!
I had the opportunity to spend almost a month on the island and I can’t help but tell you how fantastic this small portion of land and the sea that surrounds it are.
But now you will ask me, where is the island of Giglio? How to get there?
Here is everything you need to know about how to reach this pearl!
Some information about Giglio Island
Giglio island is located in Tuscany in the province of Grosseto.
Reaching it is very simple …of course it always depends from where in Italy you leave!
If like me you leave, for example, from the Marche it will take you about 1 day, but this must not discourage you because this is what is expecting you:
If you want to reach the island by train you have to go to Rome, if you come from the south or from the center, or to Pisa if you are coming from the north and then take the Pisa-Rome line.
Journey duration: about 1:50 h with fast regional connections from Rome Termini and about 2:10 h with a fast regional route from Pisa.
Get off at the stop of Orbetello-Monte Argentario.
Just outside the small Orbetello station you will find a Rama company bus that will take you directly to the embarkation in about 20 minutes.
The direction of the bus you need to take is Porto Santo Stefano.
To view the bus timetables check here: R.A.M.A.
If you prefer to reach the embarkation point by car and you live in the north, take the SS1 Aurelia towards Grosseto.
A few kilometers after Grosseto, at the detour to Albinia, take the exit to Porto Santo Stefano and from there you will arrive at the boarding point marked for the island.
Same thing if you come by car from the south: take SS1 Aurelia towards Grosseto and take the exit to Orbetello-Porto Santo Stefano.
At the embarkation you can choose between two different boat companies to reach Giglio Island: Maregiglio or Toremar.
My advice is to take the first available so that you don’t lose even a minute and get straight to the magical island!
Ferry timetables to get to Giglio Island
The companies have different schedules and for this reason you will always find a ferry waiting for you or, if not available immediately, you will have to wait only few minutes.
To consult the schedules and prices of the companies look at:
The crossing will last about 1 hour and the ticket price per passenger is around € 12-16 depending on the company chosen and the period in the year.
On the ferry can embark cars, campers, bicycles, motorbikes or buses.
However, if you want to go there by bus, I suggest you to call the bus company to book your ticket in advance.
If instead you will go without a vehicle, booking in advance is not necessary except during high season, such as August, or if you do not want to do any kind of queue!
Before embarking with your car, ask if there is the need of a circulation permit on the island for your own car (a permit was required in August 2018). My piece of advise is to go to Comune Isola del Giglio and make a query in the field “Cerca…” using the following words: “limitazione uso auto“.
Here are the numbers that will be useful to book your ticket to and from the Island:
- Toremar 199.11.77.33
- Maregiglio 0564.812920
There are rides from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm (departures vary according to the season). Always check the updated timetables on the company websites before you leave!
I advise you to buy the return ticket in advance if you have a train or bus connection at your arrival on land.
Said that, I let you dream with this photo and then tell me if it’s worth going to Giglio Island or not
